Restricted Casinos in Kenya
In a brief public notice posted on the official website of the Tax Authority of Kenya (NUS) on Friday, the customs and border control commissioner Julius Musioki formally notified all importers, customs agents and the general public that the government “immediately stopped the import of all gaming equipment, machines and related products”.
The notice also states that any future imports of gaming devices “must have express permission from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and must be coordinated with the government.” Show more
Director of the Council for the Control and Licensing of Gambling Business Charles Wambia told to Business Daily Africa that the ban on imports has become “a means of control, so we will not let low-quality automatic rifles arrive in the country.”
Other local media reported that the ban on imports was designed to curb the growth of illegal gambling operations, which in most cases are managed by Chinese citizens. Over the past three months in Kenya, numerous arrests of illegal gambling halls have been conducted, located on small squares in residential quarters.
In October last year, the chairman of the Council for the Control and Licensing of Gambling Business, Anthony Kimani Kung, warned of illegal gambling machines “established by some Chinese in collusion with dishonest local businessmen, especially bar owners.”
Kenya has one of the more mature gaming markets in Africa, with more than 30 licensed companies that offer everything from casinos to online sports betting. The government introduced a new tax regime last autumn, and promised new gaming legislation with more stringent restrictions.
Recently, the Board of Control and Licensing of the gambling business of Kenya introduced the country’s first mobile casino application, which allows players to use local currency. GameMania is the brainchild of Rambo Resource Ltd and allows you to play slots and baccarat for real money.
After beta testing for one month, the application is currently only available for Android devices, but users of iOS can play using a mobile browser. Show less
