Restricted Casinos in Gambia

According to local media, the new president of the country Adam Barrow signed a decree abolishing the ban on gambling, introduced by his predecessor. The past head of state, Yaya Jamme, banned all gambling entertainment two years ago, including sports bets, casinos and lotteries.

The motivation for the decision was simple: the president stated that in order to protect the well-being of the population, the gambling business should be withdrawn from the legal field. He called it exploitative and unethical, while mentioning that even seven-year-olds were spending money that parents gave them for school breakfasts, in order to make a bet with bookmakers. The new president believes otherwise, insisting on the need for internal modernization, economic reforms and trade liberalization. In addition to the law on gambling, he has already canceled a number of documents adopted by the past president. Show less
