Restricted Casinos in Iceland

The issue of legalization or prohibition of gambling in different countries is the subject of long and difficult disputes in the government. Despite the number of objective advantages, gambling has its drawbacks. The task of the authorities is to find an optimal balance in order to make both the state and its citizens receive from this positive effect. By 2010, the question of the legalization of gambling came to Iceland.

The idea to start to open a casino was proposed by the Ministry of industry, which expressed interest in this issue. At the same time, the preposition was met with strong indignation by the representatives of the Ministry of health. The main reason was the fact that the casino would have to attract tourists. However, the opponents of the project said that along with the casinos they would get such a serious and dangerous disease, as Ludo mania, or morbid gambling addiction. It is a problem psychologically, which is very difficult curable. In addition, according to high officials in the power of Iceland, there is something to attract tourists besides casino. By the time the country was in some types of gambling, including different types of lotteries and numerous electronic gaming machines (traditional for the whole of Europe). However, the plans of the government failed to come true then. After significant financial difficulties and default, the country had no principles.

The first thing was the question about filling holes in the state treasury. Then it was decided that casinos could be opened under certain condition on the island. And firstly they were opened by large hotels, then – by smaller hotels. Why hotels? Iceland is a small country with nice people, at the same time every year millions a lot of tourists from around the world come here to look at local beauty. Beauty, however, is rocks, geysers, oceans, volcanoes and gray sky. In the evening people at the hotel want to entertain themselves with something interesting. So, why not a casino? Show less
