Restricted Casinos in Bermuda

The Legislative Assembly of Bermuda adopted a law that would open a casino in their jurisdiction.

The initiative to introduce such a law began in December 2015, and later it was adopted with a lot of criticism from opposition members of parliament and the One Bermuda Alliance. Currently, the law has some similarities with the law adopted in 2014 and includes a two-year moratorium on the involvement of government officials in the gambling business. Show more

One of the points in the draft law states that the operators at the St Regis hotel in St. George will receive a temporary gaming license.

David Burt, leader of the opposition, said: “If we do this precedent today, every hotel owner will want to get such a license, and they will have every right to demand it.”

Minister of the tourism industry of Bermuda expressed support for the legalization of the gambling industry in the territory of this state. For a long time, the cabinet of ministers could not agree on the issue of spreading gambling business on the islands, and now a whole coalition of legislators has come out to support various types of gambling, especially the national lottery.

According to press reports, the authorities of Bermuda are going to reconsider the ban on the import of electronic devices for games and spare parts to them, as well as the ban on the use of slot machines on the territory of the islands. While it is difficult to say how soon the first lottery will be launched in Bermuda, gambling halls with slots will appear, but the fact that the gambling business will be legalized on the islands is practically solved.

The chairman of the Commission for Gambling in Bermuda reported that the first casino could be opened on the island in 2018.

The Government of Bermuda and the Casino Gaming Commission are studying casino projects to move forward with the installation of the first gambling establishment in a European country. International casino operators and investors evaluate potential business in the Bermuda market in accordance with the new legislation.

Alan Dunch, chairman of the commission, said that the first casino in Bermuda can be opened by the end of the first quarter of 2018.

We are excited about this and feel that by the end of the third quarter of this year we will have candidates presenting their projects and in the year we will provide temporary licenses. I believe that this is already available.

The official release of the Casino Gaming Commission reported that the application for a license for the casino will begin on April 17 and will last until July 21, 2017. Complexes Fairmont Southampton and Morgan’s Point have already submitted their plans to add casino floors to their tourist buildings. Show less
